Postcards from Huatulco

Part 2 of our trip to Huatulco, Mexico! We spent one afternoon touring around the city and surroundings of Huatulco, and since we visited during “low season” our tour ended up being a private tour. Jaime was great! And very patient with all of my picture taking needs.

Huatulco is a fishing village, which they are slowly attracting more American tourists. When we went there was one flight from the States each Saturday. It brought 50 people, and took another 50 people home. I never thought of this, but someone asked me What if something happen and you needed to get home? There are several flights out of Huatulco a day, you’d just have to go layover in Mexico.

After checking out the jungle, mountainous landscape and bays around Huatulco, we headed into town. Huatulco, and Oaxaca state, are known for their spices, mole, cheese, Mezcal, and fried grasshoppers. I totally ate grasshopper. Not bad. They go through a process of getting the insect to “purge” so you don’t eat its poo (if you will), and then they fry it… it really tastes like anything else fried and crispy.

Aaron really enjoyed the Mezcal. Good thing we had driver! I barely let the stuff touch my lips, it’s like rubbing alcohol to me. But you know we walked out of the little shop with Mezcal, cheese, mole, and I found some pottery.

Next we went to the weaver’s shop. This guy is 64 years old, he’s in better shape than we are! This shop makes all of their own fabrics, no machines. They had beautiful shirts, scarves, tableclothes, napkins…ect… The best part was watching him work, he’s so fast! It was incredible.

Finally, we took a walk around the central square, saw the church… although they were having service, so we didn’t get to see inside. And then Jaime took us to one of his favorite places for dinner. For Mexican Pizza. I was skeptical. I didn’t come to Mexico to have pizza. But it was really good! Sort of like an open faced Quesadilla with mole. After dinner the owner came over and offered us a shot of his Mezcal…I declined, but Aaron sure loved!
